Stories of Service: Catholic Care Staff Reflect on Mission at Anchor Day

May 17, 2025

On Thursday 15 May 2025, more than 50 Catholic Care staff from across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains gathered at St Patrick’s Cathedral Hall in Parramatta for the first All Staff Anchor Day of the year — a day to reconnect with purpose, share stories of service, and reflect on the mission that unites their work.

Representing a wide range of programs — from Family Services and Chaplaincy to Early Learning, Refugee Support and Housing — staff came together to listen, learn, and be inspired by one another.

“Everyone deserves dignity”

Throughout the day, staff shared deeply personal reflections on how they live out Catholic Care’s mission in their daily roles.

Renee Finch, a Community Outreach Officer in Springwood, spoke about the impact of simple acts of hospitality and connection.

“Everyone deserves a good quality of life and to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter what they’re going through,” Renee said. “People might come in just for a coffee, but they leave with support.”

Jess Cruz, Case Support Worker with the Houses to Homes program, finds her motivation in walking alongside young mothers facing significant challenges.

“My role has meaning. I’m here for the girls and their children — helping improve their lives. That’s what drives me,” she said.

Jess also highlighted how Anchor Day helped her understand the broader scope of Catholic Care’s services. “I came today wanting to learn about the other programs. I want to see how we can connect more for the benefit of our clients.”

Hilary Huffernam, a counsellor in the Family and Relationships team, described her work as a realisation of her calling.

“It’s a bit of a dream come true. I studied counselling and now I’m doing what I’ve worked towards,” Hilary said. “Being part of a great team with a supportive manager makes a real difference. I like to think I help people — even just in the moment.”

Grounded in Faith and Ministry

The day opened with a welcome from Executive Director Helen Emmerson and an Acknowledgement of Country by Maree Hanna, Coordinator of the Houses to Homes program. Chaplain Richard Korkor then led a time of prayer and guided reflection, inviting staff to consider how their work is a form of service and ministry.

Anchor Day also recognised those who support staff in their spiritual journey, including Deacon Roque Dias, Sr Mary Anh Vu, and Fr Zvonimir Gavranovic. Deacon Roque, who serves in hospital chaplaincy, described his ministry as both difficult and grace-filled.

He also affirmed Sr Mary’s preparation for pastoral work in mental health care, saying, “She’s a wonderful sister with a heart for this work.”

Anchored in the Mission of the Church

Bringing the day into wider context, Mike Schembri, Pastoral Plan Lead for the Diocese of Parramatta, offered a reflection on the diocesan Pastoral Plan for a Synodal Church, and how the work of Catholic Care embodies its vision.

“There are three objectives in the Plan that sit right at the heart of what you do,” Mike said:

  • A Church that is Humble and Healing
  • A Church that Reaches to the Margins
  • A Church that Walks Together

“You are living this mission,” he affirmed. “We cannot thank you enough for your service.”

Thank You

To every staff member who brings heart, presence and compassion to Catholic Care — thank you. Anchor Day 2025 was a celebration of your work, your witness, and the shared mission that continues to inspire.
