Our History

1940

Four Sydney women dreamed that anyone in distress or living in poverty could receive professional care from the Catholic Church.

They wrote to the then-Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Gilroy, suggesting that a Catholic welfare organisation be established, and the Catholic Welfare Bureau was born in 1940.

1986

When the Diocese of Parramatta was created in 1986, the welfare arm became Centrecare Parramatta.

2017

In 2017, Centacare was renamed Catholic Care Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

Now

Today, Catholic Care Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains reaches thousands of people in the community each year through the work of around 200 committed staff and volunteers.

Year in Review

These annual reports show exactly how Catholic Care is making a difference in our communities.

In the words of Bishop Van Nguyen: “This year under new leadership, Catholic Care has forged new partnerships to help more people. The scourge of family and domestic violence, unfortunately, continues to rise, and the cost-of-living crisis is having widespread impacts on many unsuspecting people. In this Year in Review, you will see how many people the team has helped through their comprehensive programs and services.”

Year in Review 2023-2024

Community Stories

Day after day, year after year, our dedicated staff and volunteers go out into our communities and connect with people in all manner of situations — whether it’s to help, support, befriend or just listen — and they invariably tell us heartwarming stories of hope, humanity and triumphs of the spirit.

Some of those stories are recorded here, and may inspire you to connect with your neighbours on many levels, too.
