Toli growing in independence

Learning how to cook was high on Toli’s list of goals for 2022 and just halfway through the year he’s well on his way to achieving it.

The 32-year-old has been cooking each week with his Disability Support Worker, Janelle, and has already learnt to make a meal plan, write a grocery list, do the shopping, preparation and cooking.

Toli, who works full-time on the Catholic Care garden crew, said he was happy to learn new skills and cook meals for his family.

“It’s been a lot of fun”, Toli said. “My favourite meal to cook has been spaghetti bolognaise.”

Catholic Care Disability Service Coordinator Brad Napper said he was proud of what Toli had achieved in a short space of time.

“Early in 2022 Toli identified a goal that he would like to increase his independent living skills further by learning how to cook a variety of different and new meals,” Brad said.

“Over the past 3 months Toli has cooked everything from spaghetti bolognaise and cottage pie, to homemade sausage rolls, burgers and roast chicken. He has become more independent in his skills in the kitchen and being able to identify what ingredients are required for each of the meals he wants to cook.”

Brad praised the team effort between Toli and Janelle.

“They’ve done an amazing job and it brings me great joy to see the sense of accomplishment that Toli has from learning these new independent living skills. I can’t wait to see what he cooks next.”
